Where to start when planning the decor of your room is sometimes the hardest part of the whole process.

There are some key factors to consider - your favourite colours, existing artwork and furnishings, the functionality of the space.

Colour choice is paramount to achieve the ‘look’ you desire. Often the rug choice which ‘grounds’ the room, is a good starting point as this will inform your other decisions. Browse The Rug Establishment website and decorating magazines to get a feel for what is on trend and available.

You will then discover what colours complement each other and will work well with furniture, artwork and accessories. Remember too it is always good to view rugs in person to touch and feel and see the subtleties of colour that are often lost in images.

A neutral palette of grey or beige may be ‘safe’ but will most often cry out for a splash of colour to create interest and make an impression. The trend seems to be that the larger furniture in the room eg sofa and ottoman, works in a neutral tone. You then have the opportunity to make the rug the ‘hero’ piece which could then coordinate with an occasional chair, cushions and artwork. If the reverse is applied and you decide on a bold statement of colour with the sofa then the rug could be textured and subtle in tone. This is all a process of adding layers which takes time and shouldn’t be hurried. Finding the perfect pieces to harmonise with each other is the key to a room that honours your own personal taste and fits with the overall style of your home.

Remember that being brave with colour often produces the most satisfying results making your room unpredictable and unique.

Consider when bringing your room together that the rug and artwork and cushions are what draw the eye which is looking for impact. This is especially true now that most modern homes have large open plan living areas. They are vast areas that need to be defined into usable spaces - dining, living, TV, kitchen. What better way to do this than with clever use of rugs which create interest and provide some separation to the various areas but still connect to the overall ‘story’ you are wanting to achieve. A beautiful patterned rug in the living space could then coordinate with a textured plain under the dining table and another simpler design for the TV area. This will allow the flooring (often beautiful wood or tiling) to be the continuity whilst bordering the different furnished areas. Here again it is imperative that you choose the right size of rug to allow for the overall balance of the room. This is particularly important in living rooms where distance between seats needs to be conducive to conversation. The rug can do that by being big enough to bring together the sofas chairs and coffee table but not too large so that you are seated too far away from each other to enjoy a convivial atmosphere.

There is so much choice in the market with regard to rugs, fabrics, furniture and artwork and doing your research will help to inform your decisions. Taking our rugs on approval or getting an ‘in situ’ image created of a specific rug dropped into a photo of your room can help for those who find it hard to visualise the overall effect.
