How to Add Colour to Your Home

19 June 2017

Most people want to add more colour to their home but are afraid of doing so because it feels like such a big commitment. Here are some helpful tips and tricks to get started:

First off, choose a colour scheme. Pick between a complementary or analogous colour scheme. Complementary colour schemes are across from each other on the colour wheel, like red and green, blue and yellow, or purple and orange. This colour scheme shows a clear separation of colours and is often more formal and visually challenging, so should be kept to the more formal areas of your home like the living and dining rooms.

An analogous colour scheme means that the colours are next to each other on the colour wheel, like yellow and green, blue and violet, or red and orange. Rooms with this colour scheme are typically more casual and restful in terms of colouration. Analogous colour schemes are best used in informal areas of the home like family rooms and bedrooms.

Besides understanding colour schemes, knowing the difference between warm and cool colours will help you decide which colours to add to your home. Warm colours like red, orange and yellow are warm and stimulating. They're good for social rooms that support interacting such as the living room, dining room, kitchen and hallway.

Cool colours are those like blue, green and grey. These cool colours are calming and relaxing – good for private rooms like bedrooms, bathrooms and home offices. Incorporating colour in bedrooms is easy. Simply buy new bedding or add a headboard!

Another easy way to add colour is to add a few throw cushions. Cushions are the quickest way to add colour and change the mood and feel of any room. Try different textures like suede, velvet, wool or heavy cotton, and go for warm colours and patterns. They're affordable and easy to change when you want to try different colours.
