Creating beautiful custom rugs are what we specialise in here at The Rug Establishment. But with so many options, you’re probably wondering where to start!

The first step is to browse our website and choose a design you absolutely love from our Custom & Bespoke page. If you have your own design, email it to us to find out if we can make it. Then comes the fun part of choosing the colours either from poms in one of our showrooms or through our online rug design tool because the variations shown on our website are computer generated.

Our designer then creates a “drawing” representative of what the rug will look like. In this case, this custom Macassar design has 8 different colours of wool and art silk. The more elaborate designs will have more colours. Drawings are created so that you can visualise the end product and so that our mill will know exactly how to handcraft your rug!

A more complicated design will also mean a higher knot count. The Macassar design is made at 100 knot and takes approximately 100 days in production. Briefly, the stages are processing the yarn, dyeing, preparing loom, weaving and finishing before leaving the mill. Please note that production time does not include time set aside for Microseal or transit. (See our Process of Making a Rug blog for more information.)

Most likely, the rug will be made in our Bhadohi mill in India, also known as "Carpet City," home to the largest hand-knotted carpet weaving industry hub. International transit usually takes 7 to 10 days but can vary depending on location. Don’t worry, we’ll get in touch with you to organise delivery details.

Then comes the exciting install date! Although creating your own custom rug can take some time, the end result is worth it and the rug will become a treasured piece of your home.
