Rug sizing ultimately comes down to personal preference, the amount of space you have, the design of the room, and the way it is placed in the space. But there are a few guidelines to reference to help make the decision.

Living Room:

Ultimate proportion is perfect for creating delineated spaces in large, open plan settings. Ensure your sizing allows for all furniture pieces to be placed on the rug comfortably.

Connection placement can help make a space feel bigger and connected. Your sizing needs to allow for the front legs of all seating to be placed on the rug.

You may find that a curved sofa with organic, soft shapes requires a round, oval, or matching organic shaped rug. The design experts in our showroom can help measure out a custom rug to perfectly complement your space.

Dining Room:

The rug needs to be wide enough that chairs remain entirely on the rug even when pulled out or when guests are sitting at the table. We usually recommend 850mm beyond the edge of the table.

If you have heavier, carver-style chairs at the head and foot of the table, you may wish to allow a little extra space to manoeuvre. If you do not have end chairs, the length can be a little shorter.

Bedroom:

Generally we recommend for the rug to land between 70-80cm on either side of the bed to clear the edges of end tables. Depending on the size of the bed and room, you can situate the rug in anchored or ultimate placement.

For smaller spaces, a round rug under the bed creates a cozy effect, and also works well if you have a curved headboard or side tables.

Runners:

We recommend allowing 10-20cm from the wall to the edge of the rug. Ensure to allow clearance for front doors and cupboard doors.

Ultimately, all rug sizing choices must come down to how it looks in your space. You can use masking tape or newspaper to mark out the size and visualise the different effects that different sizes will have.
